SandLand Opens to the Public June 30, 2007

This summer in Charlottetown, catch the magic of sand sculpture!

(Charlottetown, PE - June 4, 2007) – With over two million pounds of sand unloaded onto the Historic Charlottetown Waterfront and three weeks into construction, SandLand is progressing right on schedule. Sand sculptors have been brought in from around the world to put their talents together to create SandLand. All sculptures will explore the theme of life and times in PEI, such the Confederation Ferry sailing the Northumberland Strait, Dairy Farming, St. Dunstan’s Basilica Cathedral, An Acadian Kitchen Party, Oyster harvesting, Province House, and many more.

Canada’s largest sand show east of British Columbia will open to the public June 30, 2007, featuring 21 sand sculptures.  This attraction will include an interactive area where the young and young-at-heart can learn first-hand the techniques of sculpting sand by our in-house sand sculptors’ Ben and Abe Waterman. The Waterman Brothers, from Montague, were the winners of the 2007 Jack Frost Children’s Winter Festival snow sculpting contest.

There are many sand sculpture festivals around the world. They are very popular in Europe with sand festivals in the Netherlands (Almere and Thorn), Belgium (Zeebrugge, Bruges), North of France (Hardelot), Germany (Travemunde), China (Zhousan), and Great Britain (Great Yarmouth, Brighton). In Canada, Harrison Hot Springs has the largest sand sculpture attraction in North America.  SandLand will be the largest sand show east of British Columbia.

This summer in Charlottetown, catch the magic of sand sculpture at SandLand presented by Northumberland Ferries, June 30 – September 30, 2007, on the Historic Charlottetown Waterfront beside The Charlottetown Visitor Centre at Founders’ Hall, 6 Prince Street.
