Cruising - The Fastest Growing Segment of the Travel Industry

(Charlottetown, PE - May 25, 2007) Charlottetown is set to host the 2007 Canada New England Cruise Symposium from June 19th-21st. In addition to great educational sessions, the symposium will offer networking opportunities between industry, ports and cruise line executives. The Symposium is ideal for anyone who would like to know more about the fastest growing segment of the travel industry. Since 1970, cruising has grown by 1400%. During the next 5 years, the cruise industry will introduce at least 42 new ships and cruise passengers are expected to reach 20.7 million by 2010.

"With port facility upgrades scheduled for completion in August 2007, Charlottetown is gearing up to capitalize on the popularity of cruising,"

says Stan MacPherson, Chair of the Charlottetown Harbour Authority. "This expansion is a tremendous opportunity to increase the number of cruise ship arrivals to Charlottetown. Already this fall we will have larger ships visiting, the Grand Princess and the Celebrity Constellation."

The Symposium will offer sessions on Cruise Market Planning; Developing Canada New England into a Three Season Cruise Destination; Emerging Trends on Canada's East Coast; Adventure and Expedition Cruising and Branding Canada New England.  Executives from Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruise Lines, ResidenSea, Pearl Seas Cruises, Polar Star Expeditions and Canadian Sailing Expeditions will be attending as special guests and panel speakers.

"For the past two years, we have been aggressively promoting the new port and cruise welcome centre," says Tracey Singleton, Director of Marketing and Cruise Ship Development for Tourism Charlottetown. "In 2008, Charlottetown will welcome 40 cruise ships, 68,000 passengers and 30,000 crew. This represents growth of 142% since 2006 and we are still receiving additional requests for berth space. As host of the Canada New England Cruise Symposium, Charlottetown will continue to build momentum as a marquis cruise destination," adds Singleton.
