International Olympic Snow Sculptors Arrive in Charlottetown

(CHARLOTTETOWN, PE, February 11, 2008) - Head Sculptor, Peter Vogelaar, and his five members International Olympic Snow Sculpting Team arrived in Charlottetown this weekend to create the 4th edition of the Jack Frost Children's WinterFest presented by the Confederation Bridge.

The pinnacle of the Festival is the Aliant Snow Kingdom made from over 100 tonnes of compacted snow. Inside families will discover the magic of fairytales and pirate legends, with magical sculptures, ice slides, snow sculpting school, a snow climbing wall and ice bowling. Another highlight, the Technomedia Snow Maze, will feature a 3,600 square foot maze with a treasure chest theme and lots of hidden treasures.

"The Aliant Snow Kingdom will offer the young and young at heart a sense of wonder and surprise as they enter the hull of a pirate shop on one side and the other a castle fit for a princess," Vogelaar says with a big grin. "The best part of all of this will be watching the many families enjoy our creations. It's great to be back in Charlottetown for this event, we look forward to it each year."

Peter and his team have been sculpting snow since 1992 and sand since 2002. They have been part of the Jack Frost Children's WinterFest since its inception in 2005. In its inaugural year, The Jack Frost Children's WinterFest was a huge success, selling out days before the festival. Festival organizers have been able to accommodate the demand, by adding additional venues. This year, in addition to the Aliant Snow Kingdom at Confederation Landing Park, the Festival will offer three indoor locations: PEPSI Indoor Stage at the Waterfront Event Centre, HasbroŽ PlayZone and LegoŽ Town at The Shops of Confederation Court Mall, and CIBC PlayLand at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.

"This year, mother nature is cooperating with more snow than previous years and lots of cold weather," says Kim Green, CEO for Tourism Charlottetown. "This has had an amazing impact on ticket sales and hotel packages. We are experiencing record sales for tickets and hotel packages with over 1,200 room nights sold to date at our partner hotels. To say the least, we are delighted with this pace and encourage people not to delay in getting tickets as there are a limit to the number of tickets that will be sold," adds Green.
