Charlottetown Receives Circle of Excellence “Outstanding Achievement Award”

(Charlottetown, PE - February 10, 2008) – The City of Charlottetown received a 5-Star rating and the “Outstanding Achievement Award” in the Circle of Excellence category of the 2007-2008 WinterLights Celebrations Awards held in Saint John, NB this past weekend.

The Circle of Excellence category is the most prestigious level to which a community can achieve within the WinterLights Celebrations program. In order to reach the Circle of Excellence category, a community must first win in their population category, then win the Winners Circle category, before entering into the Circle of Excellence. Charlottetown has excelled in every category it has participated in and has attained the highest level of success possible.

While the Circle of Excellence category in viewed as “non-competitive”, the WinterLights Celebrations program honours the community that attains the highest score among those within this category by awarding the “Outstanding Achievement Award”. As the first-ever recipient of this award, Charlottetown has received the highest level of honour awarded by WinterLights Celebrations, with a score of 93%. Other communities competing in this year’s Circle of Excellence category included Labrador City, NL and Bay Robert, NL.

WinterLights Celebrations is a national competition that promotes the involvement of the whole community – citizens, volunteers, municipal government, service organizations, industry and commerce – and are evaluated in the following areas; Visual Presentation, Winter Pleasures, Festive Season Celebrations, Goodwill Programs, and Tourism & Promotion. WinterLights Celebrations encourages all Canadians to join in their local community events and activities, and to experience the beauty and thrill of winter.

“It is an honour for Charlottetown to receive this award, as it is truly reflective of our entire community and its people,” said Mayor Lee. “Residents and visitors alike are fortunate to be able to enjoy all that our community has to offer, while celebrating the winter season in the Birthplace of Confederation.”
